CHAPTER 21 – WHAT ARE YOU?

“I hope you’re happy,” Lucy hissed as soon as she slammed the door of my bedroom. “You put us all at risk, and you are no closer to saving your friends.”

“No thanks to you,” Maggie muttered.

“What’s your deal, Lucy?” I demanded. “You disappeared into thin air in that corridor. I saw you do it––don’t pretend that you didn’t.”

“I said I’d help you, and I did,” Lucy evaded. “I’ve proven my loyalty, and now you would be wise to just let it go.”

“Just let it go? I have to save everyone!” I exclaimed. “If you’d gone with us, you would have seen the horrific torture my friends have been enduring while I’ve been up here eating channa masala and sleeping in Queen Victoria’s froofy bed. This is all my fault! I can’t be responsible for more suffering!” The truth of the matter came spilling out of my mind and my mouth in my passion.

Maggie gasped while Lucy stared at me like a deer in the headlights.

“Supriya, this isn’t your fault,” Maggie said gently. She took my hand and walked me over to an elaborately carved floral chair before a small vanity. She sat me down, and Lucy cringed as she plopped herself right onto the delicate wooden platform of the vanity. It creaked precariously at her weight, but she ignored it. “Those government agents weren’t even after you. They were after Edmund, remember? I was there too when he took those bullets for his son. And Ravana has obviously been here for months preparing for whatever his maniacal plan is.” I worked hard not to argue as I contemplated her assertions. She took my silence as an invitation to continue. “Aren’t Ravana and Hanuman ancient enemies, like as ancient as you can possibly be? Ravana probably tortured him because he hates him, and he certainly hated him for thousands of years before you were born.”

“I guess,” I mumbled, unconvinced.

Maggie shrugged at my unsatisfying reaction to her pep talk. “Look at how he treated that poor guy––the one he thinks he ‘converted’ into a Rakshasa… idiot… everyone who knows anything knows you can’t do that… Surely, he has similar plans for Edmund and Ellie, or maybe even worse, because if he didn’t, they’d be dead in a ditch by now. You are not responsible for Ravana’s behavior.”

“Everything he does, he does because of Sita,” I countered. “Whatever he’s doing now, I guarantee you, it’s because of me. All of it. Otherwise, you and I would both be chained to the wall in that dungeon, too.”

“Many truths can exist at once,” Lucy interjected. “And you, Supriya, must let go of Sita’s guilt. You must free yourself from her torment, or she will hold you back, just as she has held back others.”

“What do you know about it?” Maggie blurted.

“Quite a bit, actually,” Lucy replied calmly. “But, that is beside the point. We have more important things to discuss. I would posit, Supriya, that you are not chained to the wall in the dungeon right now because Ravana is using you.
